The Men In Black have been protecting the Earth from scum and villainy for a long time, but in order to keep up with the agents of evil, there is a need for an enormous amount of funding. To fund their operations, they have taken to using any means necessary - from extortion and shady stock market trading to kidnapping. One such operation launched by Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) goes horribly wrong when his partner Agent J (Will Smith) releases a dangerous alien that has been hiding on Earth all this time. Now it's up to K and J's son who is now in training with MIB headquarters in order to fight back against the alien invasion. In "Men in Black 3", Josh Brolin stars as a young Tommy Lee Jones and Emma Thompson portrays a young version of Emma Thompson. Josh Brolin also referred to Tommy Lee Jones as being a "godfather" of the movie. Producer Barry Sonnenfeld revealed that he had been intending to include a time jump in the script since the first film. In the first script, Kay was originally supposed to be 10 years old instead of 3. Will Smith felt that the script should focus more on the adult version of J's son instead. Barry Sonnenfeld said that at first he considered hiring a younger director to direct the film, but then he decided to do it himself. He also said that it's interesting "getting into [his] own head and seeing where [he] goes with [his] themes and [his] ideas." He doesn't feel like a guest in his own movie since "[he's been working in this universe for over 17 years.]" Sonnenfeld was influenced by time travel films such as "Back to the Future Part II," and "The Terminator," and he included homages to both films in the film. He said that the film is similar to "Back to the Future Part II" in that "we basically broke into pieces." He also said that he would be very happy if people think of the film as a sequel instead of a reboot. At first Sonnenfeld didn't want to direct the movie because he felt like it was too much work, but since his schedule was empty at that moment, he decided to work on it. He admitted that during pre-production, he wasn't sure if it would actually happen due to its complexity. Sonnenfeld revealed that in order for him to direct the film, several changes were made to his script. For example, the script originally called for the humans to live underground after being evacuated. However, since Sonnenfeld felt it would be too much like "The Terminator" series, he decided not to do that. Sonnenfeld admitted that he has trouble staying quiet at work. He would occasionally ask Josh Brolin which scenes he didn't know how they got in the script, and Brolin told him that sometimes during filming they found out it was something Sonnenfeld had written years prior. According to producer Brad Epstein, Barry Sonnenfeld's idea for the film was "an evolution of an idea that began with Tim Story. cfa1e77820
